Spanish radio: a listener's guide
Spain is a country of radio talkers. Its morning shows and late-night sports programmes draw millions of listeners, and many regions have stations in their own language, so the dial changes as you move across the map.

Public radio: RNE
Radio Nacional de España (RNE), part of the public broadcaster RTVE, runs several national networks:
- Radio Nacional — news, talk and culture.
- Radio 3 — known for discovering new Spanish and international music, from indie and electronic to flamenco fusion.
- Radio Clásica — classical music and live concerts. See our classical radio guide.
- Radio 5 — rolling news.
- Radio Exterior — for Spanish speakers living abroad.
The big private networks
Most Spanish listeners tune in to private networks, which mix talk, news and sport:
- Cadena SER — the most listened-to network in Spain. It grew from Radio Barcelona, which began broadcasting in 1924 and was one of the country's first stations.
- COPE and Onda Cero — the other two big national talk networks, each with a famous morning show.
- Late-night sport — football talk shows that run past midnight are a Spanish radio tradition, especially after matches involving Real Madrid and FC Barcelona.
Music stations
- LOS40 — Spain's best-known hit-music network, famous for its weekly chart countdown. It also broadcasts in Latin America.
- Cadena Dial — music sung in Spanish, from ballads to Latin pop.
- Rock FM, Europa FM and Kiss FM — rock, pop and classic hits.
Radio in Spain's other languages
Several regions have public broadcasters in their own languages. Catalunya Ràdio broadcasts in Catalan, the Basque broadcaster EITB has stations in Basque (Euskara), and Galicia's public radio broadcasts in Galician. Listening to them is a good way to hear how different Spain's regions sound.
What you'll hear
- Flamenco — the guitar, song and dance tradition of Andalusia, in both its classic and modern fusion forms.
- Spanish pop and rock — from the 1980s Madrid scene (La Movida) to today's chart stars.
- Reggaeton and Latin urban music — now some of the most played music on Spanish hit stations. See our Latin America radio guide.
- Copla — the dramatic traditional Spanish song, still heard on oldies stations.
