Jazz grew out of African American communities in New Orleans in the early 20th century and spread with the recording and radio industries of the 1920s. Radio was one of the reasons jazz became a national — and then international — music: broadcasts of big bands in the swing era reached millions of homes. Today, jazz has become one of the most international genres, with strong scenes in Europe, Japan, South Africa, Latin America and elsewhere.
Many American jazz stations are non-profit or public broadcasters. WBGO in Newark, New Jersey, is one of the best-known jazz public radio stations in the country, and many college and community stations carry jazz programmes, especially in the evenings.
Paris has a long love affair with jazz. TSF Jazz is dedicated to the genre, and Radio France's FIP is famous for its eclectic mix, where jazz sits alongside world music, soul and film scores, introduced by calm, minimal presenting.
Radio Swiss Jazz, part of the Swiss public broadcaster, plays jazz around the clock with very little talk — an easy choice for background listening while working or studying.
